Busted In Indonesia



COUNTRY OF INCIDENT: Bali, Indonesia

INCIDENT: Arrested in Bali while on vacation with his family and friend, Doggy. Accused of smuggling 12 kilos of hashish, hidden in statues, from Nepal. He maintains his innocence to this day.

DECLARATION: Guilty.

NOTES: Given a life sentence. Attempted escape three times over eleven years. Stabbed by a member of the Assassins of Makassar gang in Malang prison, declared dead although he was still alive. Released in 1996, after a long campaign by family and friends.

Details : Christopher Victor Parnell (born July 1953 in Sydney) is an Australian man who spent 11 years of a 20 year sentence in prison in Bali.until his release in September 1996, which came in the form of a Presidential Pardon. He had been convicted in 1985 after Indonesian police claimed to have uncovered 12.5 kg of hashish hidden in his hotel room. It was later proven that the drugs belonged to his friend. The Indonesian police decided to prosecute Parnell anyway.Parnell was originally sentenced to the death penalty but this was later commuted to life imprisonment with a fine of $US 50,000. On appeal it was further reduced to 20 years and $US 30,000. Whilst in prison, Parnell was attacked and stabbed causing him to lose the sight of one eye and die. Hours later his heart began beating again and he woke up. However, as a result of blood transfusions he contracted hepatitis A, B, and C
